COOPERATION WITH VOLUNTEERS AROUND THE WORLD ORGANIZATION (VAW), UNITED STATES: THE SECOND “MOBILE CLINIC” PROGRAM (MAY 30TH, 2019 – JUNE 6TH, 2019)
[ Updated (19/06/2019) ]

As part of the second collaboration event between Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy (CTUMP) and Volunteers Around the World Organization (VAW), United States, the “Mobile Clinic” program was once again held from May 30th to June 6th, 2019 at Binh Thuy District and Co Do District in Can Tho City. The program was attended by Doctors from the Department of Internal Medicine of Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy, 16 student volunteers from the United States, organizers and student volunteers from Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy.

This is the second time the program has been implemented by the Volunteers Around the World Organization and Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy. VAW organization was founded by two founding members, Mark and Rebecca Stanley, in 2006 – a humanitarian organization and social enterprise, devoted to improving the standard of living for those that live in some of the most poverty-stricken communities of the world. In 2017, the VAW opened its first Medical Outreach in Southeast Asia. In cooperating with the Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy in this program, they wished to provide charity care and pharmacy services for adults; create an occasion for foreign students to practice and to develop their skills and see what a great experience it is to work abroad, help those in need and learn about the healthcare model and medical examination process in Viet Nam.

Over the course of six days, the cooperative team of the Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy and Volunteers Around the World Organization had successfully achieved their missions and targets in program. The team organized “Mobile Clinic” program at three locations in Can Tho City: two in Binh Thuy District, at the People’s Committee Buildings of Bui Huu Nghia Ward (May 30th) and Long Hoa Ward (May 31st – June 1st), and one in Co Do District, Thoi Hung Commune (June 2nd, 4th and 5th). In total there were 591 patients came in for consultation and complete health checkup. The student volunteers from the United States and Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy helped the Doctors with tasks, such as collecting personal information and vital signs of patients, distributing medicines to patients and instructing them on how to take their medicines correctly. The team had also organized an Education Day to teach young children necessary life skills.
