LECTURER FROM THE FACULTY OF ODONTO-STOMATOLOGY ATTENDED ORAL AND MAXILLOFACIAL PATHOLOGY TRAINING COURSE AT RUTGERS UNIVERSITY, THE USA

From July 01st, 2022 to September 30th, 2022, Dr. DO Thi Thao, a lecturer of the faculty of Odonto-Stomatology, Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy participated in Oral Medicine course at Rutgers University, including oral diseases, facial pain, and temporomandibular disorders at the School of Dental Medicine, Rutgers University, USA.


Included contents in the course:

Attending sessions about orofacial diseases, facial neuro-muscular system, temporomandibular joint disorders, and brain disorders. Considerations in the dental management of patients with special medical conditions such as autism, malnutrition, and airway disorders.

Assisting in reaching oral diseases and attending classes in setting up a dental treatment planning for final year dental students.

Providing treatment for patients with oral mucosal diseases, orofacial pain, and temporomandibular disorders. Practicing biopsies techniques of oral lesions to diagnose diseases, learning techniques of making instruments in temporomandibular disorders treatment.

Delivering treatment for patients with special diseases including HIV/AIDS, obesity, stroke, diabetes, or post-surgery patients with uncomplete maxillofacial anatomy due to cancers, patients with depleted physical condition due to undergone cancer treatment in other parts of the body, and uncooperative patients.

Attending the postgraduate journal club with other students in Orofacial Pain, and updated other methods for academic article evaluation.

Presenting cases report and scientific research activities with other postgraduate students.

Participate the program of oral cancer screening examination for the women in the community at Newark, New Jersey.

Although there are difficulties due to different time zones and changing environments, this course was an opportunity for our lecturer to improve foreign language skills, enhance professional knowledge about recognizing symptoms and delivering  treatment options for oral mucosal diseases, clinical types of orofacial pain, and temporomandibular joint disorders. In addition, this training course helped the lecturer get access to new techniques in teaching and managing dental students and postgraduates as well as collaborate with other stomatologists from countries around the world, connecting with other professors at School of Dental Medicine, Rutgers University.
