STRENGTHENING COLLABORATION IN MEDICAL EDUCATION BETWEEN VIETNAM, LAO PDR AND CAMBODIA

On September 27th and 28th, 2022, with the support of medical education experts from Havard Medical School, Health Advancement in Vietnam (HAIVN) and collaboration with University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City and Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy (CTUMP), there was a meeting of enhancing the cooperation in medical training between Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia.


On the side of University of Health Sciences, Vientiane, Laos, the meeting welcomed  Dr. Sysavanh Phommachanh - Deputy Director of Institute of Education (IRED) and leaders of faculties and departments. On the side of Putthisatra University, Cambodia, there was Dr. Vannary Yi - Vice Dean of Faculty of Medicine and leaders of faculties. On behalf of HAIVN/Harvard University, the USA, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Barbara Gottlieb, Expert at Harvard Medical School - Co-Director of the Project of enhancing cooperation in Medical Education, and Dr. David B. Duong, Expert at Harvard Medical School - Deputy Director of HAIVN in Boston, professional consultant on enhancing cooperation in medical education took part in the meeting. The meeting also welcomed Assoc. Prof. Dr. VUONG Thi Ngoc Lan - Dean of Faculty of Medicine, University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City, Co-director of enhancing cooperation in medical education network, and members.  About HAIVN, there was the attendance of Dr. NGUYEN Quang Trung – Director, and members. On the side of Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy, the meeting welcomed Assoc. Prof. Dr. NGUYEN Van Lam – Vice Rector of the University and leaders of faculties, units, and departments.

The Partnership for Health Advancement in Vietnam (HAIVN) is a collaboration between Harvard Medical School (HMS) and two HMS-affiliated teaching hospitals, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), and Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), which supports Vietnam’s health system through a comprehensive approach to building healthcare worker capacity.

The meeting program began with the introduction speech of the 03 participating medical universities, followed by the introduction and technology transfer of Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) presented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Barbara Gottlieb. In addition, the experts also introduced the Plan-Do-Study-Act Cycle (PDSA), with specific examples of applying and developing PDSA in each university’s condition and figuring out effective and feasible solutions.

The meeting was an important event along with the project of enhancing cooperation in medical education between Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, which aims to stimulate innovation in medical education and provide a qualified healthcare workforce for the area.
