Workshop "Overview of EPAs applied in teaching and evaluating medical students."

On the afternoon of February 23rd, at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Workshop "Overview of EPAs applied in teaching and evaluating medical students" took place. The workshop was organized by the Faculty of Medicine, Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy in collaboration with experts form HAIVN, to share an overview of EPAs (Entrustable Professional Activities) and to analyze principles and tools for developing EPAs.

The workshop was held successfully thanks to the efforts and solidarity of the University's staff, especially the guidance and sharing of experts from HAIVN.

 

  Attending the workshop were MSc. MD. PHAM Xuan Truong – IMPACT , HAIVN project management  specialist, ; PhD. . TRAN Thi Lan, IMPACT MED project coordinator.

On the side of Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy, the workshop welcomed PhD. . LE Van Minh, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine; PhD.  TRAN Thai Thanh Tam, PhD.. NGUYEN Nhu Nghia, Deputy Head of the Faculty of Medicine and more than 100 participants were deans of other faculties; departments, assistants, and lecturers; staff of centers and office Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy.

  During more than 3 hours of the workshop "Overview of EPAs applied in teaching and evaluating medical students", the presenters gave an overview, analysis of principles and tools of EPAs to help users have a strong knowledge for future generations of high-quality healthcare workers. At the same time, the workshop was also an opportunity to share ideas, connect and learn from experienced advisors from HAIVN.

                Throughout the workshop, the organizing board also hopes that delegates will have such products: drafts for developing Principles/Procedures for developing EPAs as a method of Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME); prepare initial steps to build EPAs tool; apply EPAs in training programs and student assessments. The delegates participated actively and excitedly in the discussion part .

Transfering the model from Traditional Medical Education to Competency-based Medical Education is a common trend in worldwide to improve the effectiveness of medical training. Faculty of Medicine, Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy, along with domestic and foreign experts in the field of health sciences are implementing this program.

 

HAIVN (the Partnership for Health Advancement in Vietnam) is an association between Harvard Medical School (HMS) and two medical training organizations under HMS, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) and Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH). ).

The IMPACT MED Alliance is sponsored by USAID, HAIVN/BIDMC accompanied by ten leading universities of medicine and pharmacy in Vietnam in the work of building a team of competent, effective medical staff that meet the needs of the healthcare field in the 21st century, contributes to increase the resilience of the healthcare system and national health security, promotes equitable and evidence-based health maintenance.

This project will support Vietnam universities in the healthcare field to transform their model from Traditional Medical Education to Competency-based Medical Education.
